Description
What it is. 1-Isopropyl-4-methylbenzene (para-cymene) is a flavouring substance obtained by chemical synthesis, with a minimum purity of 97%. It belongs to functional group 2b (flavouring compounds) under EU feed additive legislation, identified by FLAVIS number 01.002 and CAS 99-87-6.
What it is for. It is used as a sensory additive to flavour compound feed, authorised for all animal species. As with other flavouring substances, it is generally incorporated via a premix rather than added directly. It is typically used at low inclusion levels, in line with recommended flavouring practice.
Points to watch. The recommended maximum content of active substance is 14 mg/kg complete feed for cats and 25 mg/kg for other species and categories, at 12% moisture. These levels, the functional group, identification number, name and added quantity must appear on the label when thresholds set by the regulation are exceeded. Storage and stability conditions are those specified in the additive's and premixes' instructions for use.
