2-Ethylbutyric acid

Additive Sensory additives Authorised in animal feed (EU)

Description

What it is. 2-Ethylbutyric acid is a flavouring substance obtained by chemical synthesis (FLAVIS number 08.045, CAS 88-09-5), with a minimum purity of 98 %. It belongs to the sensory additives functional group (2b), intended for flavouring animal feed.

What it is for. This additive is used to impart or reinforce a flavour note in compound feed, across all animal species. It is incorporated as a premixture before being added to the complete feed. Its use fits a logic of palatability or organoleptic standardisation of formulas, without any specific nutritional function.

Points to watch. The recommended maximum content for the active substance is 5 mg/kg of complete feed at 12 % moisture; beyond this level, specific labelling of the additive, its identification number and the quantity added is required. Storage and stability conditions must be specified in the instructions for use, and personal protective measures are required during handling due to risks of inhalation and skin or eye contact. Authorisation for this substance expires on 6 February 2027.
