Description
What it is. Enzyme preparation of 6-phytase (EC 3.1.3.26) produced by fermentation of Komagataella pastoris (DSM 23036), authorised as a zootechnical feed additive (functional group 4a, digestibility enhancer). The additive has a minimum activity of 4 000 OTU/g in solid form and 8 000 OTU/g in liquid form.
What it is for. Used to improve digestibility by hydrolysing phytate and releasing inorganic phosphate, reducing the need for supplemental inorganic phosphorus. Authorised for all avian species other than turkeys, turkeys, all porcine species other than piglets, piglets, and fish. Recommended for use in feed containing more than 0.23% phytin-bound phosphorus. A study in laying hens fed a diet without inorganic phosphate and with reduced energy and nutrient levels illustrates one possible use context of this enzyme type.
Points to watch. Minimum use levels are set per species: 125 OTU for avian species (other than turkeys) and porcine species (other than piglets), 250 OTU for turkeys and piglets, and 500 OTU for fish. Storage conditions and thermal stability must be specified in the instructions for use of the additive and premixture. Personal protective equipment, including respiratory protection, is required when handling the additive where risks cannot otherwise be minimised.
