Zinc chloride anhydrous

Additive Nutritional additives Authorised in animal feed (EU)

Description

What it is. Anhydrous zinc chloride is an inorganic trace element additive, supplied as a powder with a minimum zinc content of 46.1 %. Its active substance has the chemical formula ZnCl2 (CAS 7646-85-7).

What it is for. It is used as a source of zinc, an essential trace element involved in enzymatic, immune and skin/hoof functions. It is authorised for all animal species, generally incorporated into premixes or compound feed in liquid premix form to cover zinc requirements according to species, physiological stage and diet composition. The choice between this and other zinc sources depends on formulation constraints and bioavailability targets.

Points to watch. Regulation sets maximum total zinc contents in complete feed depending on species: 200 mg/kg for dogs and cats, 180 mg/kg for salmonids and milk replacers for calves, 150 mg/kg for piglets, sows, rabbits and fish other than salmonids, and 120 mg/kg for other species or categories. Total zinc intake from all sources in the diet must be considered to avoid exceeding these limits, and the additive must be incorporated as a liquid premix as specified.
